Mount Bromo Without a Tour: Everything You Need to Know
Instead of joining one of the countless sunrise tours, we rented a scooter in Malang and travelled to Mount Bromo completely on our own. Here is our full experience – including everything we wish we had known beforehand.

- Scooter: Rent one in Malang and make sure it has enough power – some parts of the route are very steep.
- Travel time: around 2 hours from Malang to accommodation near Mount Bromo.
- Sunrise start: We left at 3:00 a.m. – much later than most organised tour groups.
- Flashlight: Definitely bring one for the walk up to King Kong Hill.
- Best viewpoint: King Kong Hill – around a 45-minute walk from Seruni Point.
Getting There and Where to Stay
We rented a scooter in Malang and made our way to Mount Bromo independently – including our first ride across the famous “Sea of Sand”.
After around two hours on the road, we reached our accommodation close to the volcano. One important tip: make sure your scooter has enough power, because some sections of the route are seriously steep.
Hiking Up for Sunrise
We only set off at 3:00 a.m., which felt much more relaxed than joining one of the organised tours.
After around 15 minutes on the scooter, we reached the parking area at Seruni Point. From there, it only takes a few minutes to reach the first viewpoint.
If you want what is probably one of the best views of Mount Bromo, continue towards King Kong Hill. The walk takes around 45 minutes and follows some small, rough paths, so a flashlight is essential.
Once we reached the top, we realised that from the other side you can actually drive almost all the way up towards the viewpoint. If only we had known that beforehand. 😭
Leaving Our Accommodation
Much later than the tour groups, which meant we could start the day feeling far more relaxed and rested.
Arriving at Seruni Point
Around 15 minutes by scooter from our accommodation.
Walking to King Kong Hill
Around 45 minutes along small and sometimes rough paths – completely manageable with a flashlight.
The Moment That Made It All Worth It
Mist, volcanoes and the first rays of sunlight – the entire landscape looked almost unreal. Photos simply cannot capture what it felt like to stand there.
Breakfast & Ride to the Crater
While the first tour groups already had to head back, we could stay and enjoy the view. Afterwards, we had breakfast and then rode our scooter across the Sea of Sand towards the crater.

The crater itself was impressive, but the strong smell of sulphur meant we did not stay there for very long. Still, it was a short but worthwhile stop on our way back.
Our Tip: Stay Close to the Volcano
If you want to experience sunrise at Mount Bromo independently, staying nearby makes a huge difference. It saves you from having to make the long journey from Malang in the middle of the night.
